NORMAN, Okla. -- Members of the District 2 Oklahoma County Commissioner's staff are mourning the loss of a coworker. Safari McDoulett, 36, was killed Monday evening when an impaired driver hit her SUV head on east of Norman.

She was a community relations director for the District 2 County Commissioner’s Office.

Police say they got several calls from motorists who were frantic about an erratic driver who was swerving in and out of traffic, but before anyone could stop him, the unthinkable happened.

Remnants of the wreck are still scattered across Highway 9 east of Norman.

Police say McDoulett was killed when 53-year-old Mark Allen Peters of Noble hit her SUV head on.

Several frantic drivers called 911 in an attempt to get Peters off the road.

McDoulett was most likely on her way to her fiancé’s house when the wreck happened.

Commissioner Brian Maughan says McDoulett's cell phone was destroyed in the crash and that the only contact police could find was his business card.

Maughan broke the news to her family.

"We've been just hollowed today. We're all grief stricken," he said. "It was the hardest thing I've ever had to do, to go tell her mother."

Peters was taken into custody and is now facing several charges including first-degree manslaughter, obstructing an officer and possession of a dangerous substance.
