Volunteer advocates needed for abused children

OKLAHOMA CITY — Abused children come from every zip code in Oklahoma County.

Only a third of Oklahoma County juvenile cases have a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteer.

CASA volunteers are the eyes and ears of the court; they speak for the children.

CASA of Oklahoma County has about 200 volunteers right now.

They are actively recruiting additional volunteers to meet the needs of the Oklahoma County juvenile court system.

CASA of Oklahoma County Executive Director, Lee Ann Limber, hopes to add 100 volunteers in the next year.

10-year-old boy sworn in as police officer

LEXINGTON, Okla. — An Oklahoma boy battling cancer recently got a big surprise.

A small town police department decided to let him join the force.

It’s a dream come true for the 10-year-old boy.

He not only joined in name but got the gear and a few assignments to go with it.

Xander Moore loves sports especially baseball and the OKC Thunder.

He may seem like an average 10 year old, but he’s actually an honorary member of the Lexington Police Department.

Complete with a real uniform, a badge and handcuffs.

His mom, Ricki Lea, said, “It’s the only thing he hangs up, everything else goes to the floor.”

Chief Deana Allen, with the Lexington Police Department, said, “He really, he represented what an officer is supposed to represent, fearlessness and strength.”

Strength through a battle with cancer.

OKLAHOMA CITY — Thunder fans are still re-living the team’s victory over the L.A. Lakers Monday night in Game 1 of the second round of NBA playoffs.

During the post-game press conference, Russell Westbrook was turning heads with his fashion choice: a fitted polo emblazoned with fishing hooks.

It was an interesting choice for the usually fashionable NBA star.

The final score was 119-90.

OK Democrats react to OK Republican fight

NORMAN, Okla. — There were some serious fireworks at the Republican State Convention in Norman Saturday.

People were accusing one another of verbal and physical attacks.

Governor Fallin was even booed when she encouraged delegates to support the presumed nominee, Mitt Romney.

Ron Paul supporters said the Mitt Romney folks started it, but the Romney supporters claim the same of the Paul people.

Now both Republicans and Democrats are speaking out about the chaos.

Matt Pinnell is the chairman of the Oklahoma Republican Party.

He said the convention was messy but fair.

He said, “We don’t have a nominee yet. Everybody is entitled to their opinion. Everybody can support whoever they want in the primary but we have to behave in the right way as well. Some of the behavior on Saturday is not going to help us build a majority and it certainly is not going to help us defeat Barack Obama in November.”
