Coming to Norman: Medieval Fair
Time: 10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.
The Medieval Fair of Norman, Oklahoma is coming again! Once a year this festival of medieval times comes around like it has been since 1977. Once held at the popular Duck Pond, the fair grew to such proportions to be moved to the City of Norman Reeves Park. Reeves Park is larger and can accommodate the crowds. Don’t let the thought of crowds worry you though, there is plenty of room to walk around and enjoy yourself.
What is the Medieval Fair? It is a celebration of times that were rough, times before the Renaissance when the economy was balancing out. Medieval times were a time of self exploration, rediscovery and rebuilding. The people were strong and creative entrepreneurs. They enjoyed music, good food, and knew how to have a good time. They had to know how to survive on what they could and get along with those around them. You can expect the same feeling in the present day fair.
What can you expect from the Medieval Fair? Good times, friendly people, live re-enactments of battles, and plenty of venders. Last year there were over 200 venders to choose from. You can find everything from smoked turkey legs to clothing. The live reenactments are delightful to watch. You may even climb a rope or take part in a sword fight. Let yourself go and enjoy! Venders will be in period clothing, and many will speak with accents from the time period, though this is not required to attend. You can enjoy in your own style of clothing or come in costume to add to the fun of the fair. Search the Medieval Fair website and look through the pictures of last year if you need an idea of how to dress. (www.medievalfair.org) Do not worry if the weather is bad, the fair will go on!! April in Oklahoma can be eventful, but as long as you are prepared for anything you will be fine. Some years, people have gotten sunburned, other years, people have had to wear winter coats, but this never affects the quality of the fun. Along with the venders in tents and booths, there will be walking venders for you pleasure. There is no limit to the fun and entertainment. Fun times can be had for free or as much as you want to spend, either way, the Medieval Fair is not to be missed!
